The 3 Main Types of Marine Refrigeration Systems

There are three basic types of marine refrigeration systems out there. Knowing which one you’ve got will help you maintain it well. Knowing what the different options are will help you make a smart decision when buying a marine refrigerator.

Self-Contained Marine Refrigerators: These are just like the fridge you have at home, but usually a bit smaller. All the components are typically built into the case with the compressor sitting on a tray below the insulated cabinet.
Thermoelectric Units: Thermoelectric marine refrigeration units use something called the Peltier effect to keep items cold. The Peltier effect works by directly current between different types of conductors which creates both hot and cold areas.
Holding Plate Refrigeration: These systems have a plate that gets very cold and stays cold for a long time. The plate acts more or less like having a big block of ice on the side of your refrigerator box.

We will write an article that explains how to choose the right type of marine refrigerator for your vessel soon — so stay tuned for that.
